History: Colombia is one of the oldest democracies in Latin America. The United States established diplomatic relations with Colombia in 1822 after Colombia gained independence from Spain.
Colombia has faced armed conflict for almost 50 years, which has been fueled by illegal drug production and trafficking. The government is working to re-establish state control through a combination of security, counter-narcotics, and economic and social development.
