WASHINGTON—White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House on Feb. 24 that President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union speech of his second term will include new policy announcements.
“He will, of course, lay out a very ambitious agenda, I think, for the working people of this country to make America more affordable and prosperous and safe and make the American dream more attainable,” Leavitt said.
She offered no additional details about the new policies.
With the midterm elections approaching, Trump is expected to highlight his administration’s objectives and accomplishments.
“The president will lay out the case for why he and Republicans are better suited to tackle, continue tackling the affordability crisis that was created by the Biden administration and Democrats on Capitol Hill,” Leavitt said.
“So, the President is going to make the case that three more years with him in the White House and with Republicans on Capitol Hill, we can finally achieve the American dream in this country again that we had in his first term, but was lost because of Joe Biden and the Democrats.”
The speech will touch on cooling inflation, lower mortgage rates, and record stock market highs, among other economic developments.
Trump is also expected to comment on Congress’s failure to fund elements of the federal government.
“He will call on Democrats in Congress to reopen the Department of Homeland Security that they have shut down,” Leavitt said.

One theme of the address will be the nation’s semiquincentennial anniversary this year, with events planned nationwide and a massive celebration on July 4.
“You’re going to hear a speech that is a celebration of 250 years of our nation and on our nation’s independence,” Leavitt said. “You’re going to hear the president share tear-jerking stories of American heroes past and present who really exemplify what it means to be a patriotic American.”
Leavitt told Fox News on Tuesday that the president’s unnamed guest list includes military members and Americans who benefited from the administration’s policies, including a waitress from Pennsylvania whose family will take home more than $5,000 in tax refunds.
Another family in attendance was able to purchase fertility treatments for reduced prices after the TrumpRX.gov website launched.
First Lady Melania Trump will be joined by two children participating in her Fostering the Future initiative.
Trump is set to speak at 9 p.m. ET, with two hours scheduled for his address.
“It’s going to be a long speech, because we have so much to talk about,” the president said Feb. 23 during a ceremony at the White House honoring Angel families.
