Genealogies are the study of family history, ancestry, and lineage, and can also refer to the records that document this information. Genealogies can be presented in a variety of ways, including:
Family trees: A visual representation of family relationships in a tree structure. More detailed family trees used in social work and medicine are called genograms.
Historical records: Documents that record key life events of ancestors, such as oral interviews and other records.
Genetic analysis: A way to obtain information about a family.
Genealogies can be used to understand: kinship, pedigrees, marriage regulations, rules of descent and inheritance, and terminological systems of address and reference.
Genealogies can also be found in the Bible, where they can be used to understand God’s grace and mercy. For example, the Bible’s genealogies show that God uses imperfect people to accomplish His purposes, and that God’s grace extends to all people.
