Captain James Cook was a British explorer, scientist, and naval captain who led three voyages to the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1779. His expeditions mapped most of the Pacific Ocean, discovered new islands, and helped establish Great Britain as a leading maritime and trading nation. Cook is known for charting New Zealand and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in 1770, and disproving the existence of a fabled southern continent called Terra Australis.
