An 8.7 magnitude earthquake has hit off the east coast of Russia, and has triggered tsunami warnings across the northern Pacific Ocean.

The quake, which struck at 7:24 p.m. ET, had an epicenter at a depth of 18.2 kilometres off the coast of Kamchatsky, Russia.

Tsunami warnings are in place for Alaska, Hawaii, and other Pacific Islands, while a tsunami watch is in place for the U.S. West Coast.

Japan has also issued its own tsunami warning, warning of up to 3-meter-high waves, with some areas ordered to evacuate.
